Match Report | FC Hartlepool 1-1 Ryton & Crawcrook Albion

FC Hartlepool maintained their unbeaten start to the 2026/27 Northern League Division Two campaign with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Ryton & Crawcrook Albion, recovering from an early setback to earn a point in front of 192 supporters at Grayfields.

First Half

After opening the season with a point away at Darlington Town, Mark Loynes’ side were looking to make home advantage count, but it was Ryton who made the brighter start.

The visitors carried the greater attacking threat in the opening exchanges and took the lead after 18 minutes. A direct ball over the top split the FC defence, allowing Louis Calvert to race through before confidently finishing beyond Logan Douglas.

Ryton almost doubled their advantage moments later. A dangerous corner was met by a close-range header, but Douglas reacted superbly to produce a magnificent reflex save before FC scrambled the loose ball clear off the line.

That proved to be a pivotal moment.

FC Hartlepool gradually grew into the contest, with Mikey McGee coming close after turning sharply on the edge of the penalty area and curling narrowly wide.

The equaliser arrived on 36 minutes. A long throw into the penalty area caused problems before the ball was flicked into the path of Matthew Lovatt, who produced an excellent outside-of-the-boot finish into the far corner to level the scores before half-time.

Second Half

FC Hartlepool emerged for the second period with renewed confidence and controlled much of the play.

The hosts enjoyed the majority of possession and pinned Ryton back inside their own half as they searched for a winner. Tom Gavin came close with an effort that flew just over the crossbar before Mark Loynes introduced fresh legs just after the hour.

Liam Appleby, Olly Burrows and Will Coxon all entered the action, helping FC maintain the intensity.

The closest FC came to finding a second goal saw Jordan Fielding deliver an inviting cross which eventually fell to Coxon on the edge of the area, but his first-time strike cleared the crossbar.

FC continued to press during stoppage time, creating a couple of promising openings, but Ryton stood firm to leave Grayfields with a point.

The Verdict

While Ryton arguably edged the opening 45 minutes, FC Hartlepool finished the stronger side and can take plenty of positives from another disciplined and energetic performance.

Two matches into the new campaign, Terry Hills’ side remain unbeaten, collecting four points from a possible six and continuing to build momentum ahead of another home fixture this weekend.
