Spirited FC display not enough as Billingham maintain perfect start
FC Hartlepool were left frustrated at Grayfields Enclosure as Billingham Town claimed a 2-0 victory to preserve their perfect start to the Northern League Division Two season. Despite creating a number of excellent opportunities and forcing several outstanding saves from the visiting goalkeeper, FC were unable to find a breakthrough as goals from Jake Toase and Daniel Dryden secured all three points for the visitors.

Early setback for the hosts
Billingham Town arrived at Grayfields Enclosure having won each of their opening three league fixtures and made the ideal start inside seven minutes.
A corner into the FC penalty area caused problems and the delivery found Jake Toase, who rose highest at the back post to head beyond Jack Halton and hand the visitors an early advantage.
Rather than allowing the setback to disrupt their rhythm, FC responded well.
Tom Gavin soon produced an excellent through ball to release Mikey McGee, whose first-time effort flashed narrowly wide of the far post and provided the hosts with their first meaningful opportunity of the evening.
Although Billingham enjoyed more possession during the opening stages, FC remained disciplined without the ball and looked increasingly dangerous every time they broke forward.
FC finish the first half strongly
As the half wore on, FC began to wrestle momentum away from the visitors and created the better chances before the interval.
Jordan Fielding found space from a well-worked free-kick routine after thirty minutes, but his effort lacked the power to seriously trouble Theo Webster.
Five minutes later came FC’s best opportunity of the opening period.
Jake Stott surged down the left before delivering an inviting low cross into the six-yard area where Nathan Bayes looked certain to equalise, only for Webster to produce an outstanding save from close range.
The pressure continued.
Just before the break, McGee again drove down the right before cutting the ball back perfectly for Tom Gavin. The midfielder struck a superb first-time effort that looked destined for the top corner, but Webster somehow reacted to tip the ball onto the crossbar.
It was a remarkable save that preserved Billingham’s lead and left FC wondering how they had not drawn level before the interval.
Despite trailing 1-0 at the break, the home side could take plenty of encouragement from a first half that finished firmly in their favour.
Visitors extend their advantage
FC began the second half positively, with McGee testing the goalkeeper shortly after the restart.
Boldon remained a threat on the counter, however, and Jack Halton produced an excellent save to keep the deficit at one.
FC then looked to inject fresh energy into the contest with the introductions of Fin Smith, Nathan Bayes and Jake Stott.
The visitors doubled their advantage in the 71st minute when a long throw was not dealt with inside the penalty area, allowing Liam Thear to convert from close range.
Boldon continued to apply pressure and added a third ten minutes later. A dangerous free-kick caused problems inside the box, with Max Cowburn reacting quickest to turn the loose ball home.
Positive changes after the restart
Harvey Parkinson replaced Jake Stott at the interval as FC looked to maintain the momentum they had built before half-time.
The visitors almost doubled their lead within moments of the restart, only for FC to scramble the ball off the goal line after another dangerous Billingham attack.
FC responded well once again.
Further attacking substitutions arrived just before the hour mark, with Fin Smith replacing Nathan Bayes and Callum Young replacing Josh Stiff.
The changes almost paid immediate dividends.
Parkinson and Smith linked up well before a dangerous cross found Young inside the penalty area, but his header was comfortably gathered by Webster.
With twenty minutes remaining, Xander Hunt replaced Mikey McGee before Brennan Ball entered the action in place of Tom Gavin as FC continued searching for an equaliser.
Fine margins prove decisive
Having weathered sustained FC pressure, Billingham struck a decisive second fourteen minutes from time.
The visitors regained possession in midfield before breaking quickly, with Daniel Dryden finishing calmly to double their advantage.
The scoreline was harsh on the hosts, who refused to let their heads drop.
Lewy Green came within inches of reducing the deficit when his superb free-kick crashed back off the crossbar with Webster beaten, while Brennan Ball later headed narrowly wide as another promising chance went begging.
Scott Close was shown a late yellow card following a shove in the back during the closing stages, but FC continued to battle until the final whistle.
Ultimately, Billingham demonstrated why they have made such an impressive start to the campaign, while FC were left frustrated after producing a performance that deserved more than the final score suggested.

While the result was disappointing, there were plenty of encouraging signs throughout the ninety minutes. Against one of the division’s early pace-setters, FC created numerous opportunities, matched the visitors for long periods and showed enough quality to believe positive results are just around the corner.
